Much like its namesake, the former, right honourable 'Minister for Everything', the Hinze dam on Australia's Gold Coast is most impressive. It is also the best spot on the Gold Coast to try your hand at fresh water fishing.
Not only is it stocked with a decent range of Australia's native species, such as Mary River Cod, Australian Bass, Silver Perch, Golden Perch and Saratoga, but it's also a beautiful place to sit and relax.
As the Dam supplies the Gold Coast region with drinking water, motor boats other than electric, are strictly forbidden. You can however indulge in non-motorised boating options if that's your thing.
Due to the protected nature of this environment, fishing on the Hinze Dam is allowed only under certain conditions. Restrictions on the types of bait you can use as well as bag and size limits are enforced and fishing permits are necessary. No need to plan too far ahead though as you can buy one from Park Rangers and selected kiosks as well as Gold Coast City Council offices. At $5 per week or $40 per year, they won't put too much of a strain on the hip pocket, however you are limited to only one rod or line at a time.
And when the day is done, and you've bagged yourself a beauty, you're quite welcome to fire up one of the parks wood or electric barbeques, kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Don't drink too much though; no camping is permitted!
